Dead to Life

Zombie permit

By Lisa Nordell-Detres

*Spoiler Alert* If you plan on seeing the movie Warm Bodies, don’t read this until after seeing the movie.

My husband and I took our teenage daughter to see this movie the other day and even though it was a zombie apocalypse movie, I left the theatre feeling good about my life in Christ and with a new hope and love for the lost. Really? Do tell!

This movie is taken from the perspective of a teenage zombie, R, who still has a thought process, but like all the other zombies, mostly grunts when trying to communicate. He goes with a group of zombies to feed on (what else but) live humans when he sees Julie and takes a liking to her to the point of protecting her from the other zombies. R takes Julie to a safe place where he has been collecting things that remind him of his past humanity and convinces Julie that she needs to stay there for a few days until the other zombies forget about her.

Over the next few days, Julie overcomes her terror of being taken by a zombie and begins to realize that R is sincere. R slowly starts to come back to life because of his affection for Julie. Over time, some of the other zombies also start coming back to life when they see the bond that Julie and R have formed. The problem for R and Julie is now to keep the live humans from shooting R long enough to convince them that R is no longer a threat to them.

Here is the spoiler: in the end, R becomes human again because of his relationship with Julie and the “not too far gone” zombies join forces with the still living humans to defeat the “bonies,” zombies who are too far gone to come back to life.

This got me thinking about the fact that we were all dead in our sins, but God loved us enough to send His son, Jesus, to redeem us from our sins and give us new lives. Love truly does bring the dead back to life!

In Ephesians 2:4-6, the apostle Paul says this: “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,”

The “bonies” rejected the love that would bring them back to life. Many people reject the new life and love that knowing God would bring to them, but there are so many of the walking dead around us that just need some love and grace. Instead of shooting those who are dead in their sins, let’s try loving them back to life the way Jesus loved us.
