Yes, He Did!

For nearly two thousand years, Christians have been celebrating Good Friday and Easter. One event, the execution of an innocent man, happens all too often while the other event only happened once. Two thousand years later, Jesus Christ is still the topic of much discussion and misunderstanding. Regardless of your personal opinion about Jesus, this man has some serious staying power!

“Who do men say that I am?” Jesus asked His followers. People still entertain that question today. For those who think that Jesus was a great teacher, you are right. Jesus taught the law of love, He taught the golden rule. Jesus also taught that He was one with God the Father and that He (Jesus) was the only way to get to God. Yes, He taught that. Some people think that Jesus was a prophet. They are also right; He prophesied that He would be crucified and then rise from the dead three days later. All of His prophesies came true with the exception of those that referred to the end of the world. Yes, Jesus accurately prophesied his own death, burial and resurrection.

Many people can’t believe that Jesus came back from the dead, but there is more than enough evidence to support this fact. There were hostile witnesses, the Roman Guards who were bribed to make up a story about what happened to Jesus’ body (Matthew 28:11-15). There were hundreds of eye witnesses to the risen Jesus (I Corinthians 15:3-8); even one of His own followers, Thomas, could not believe until he had seen Jesus alive (John 20:24-29).

Jesus changed peoples’ lives. Billions of lives, starting with His own followers, who cowered in an upper room after His death but then a few weeks later for the rest of their lives, boldly preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All but one were martyred for their faith in Christ. Despite the forces that have stood to exterminate Christians from early Rome until the worldwide persecution that millions of Christians face today, the Church continues to grow because Jesus is still changing lives. Yes, He does! If you let Him in, He will gently and lovingly change your life. Yes, He will!

Fear Not!

I did not realize as a child what a blessing it was to be raised by a mother who was in many ways fearless. In her forties, Mom beat down her fear of heights by taking up skiing. This meant driving into the Colorado Rockies over Loveland Pass before the Eisenhower Tunnel was built. That hair-raising two lane road rose up to an altitude over 11,000 feet and offered amazing views of the world below. As children, my two brothers and I could not understand why Mom talked nonstop about how beautiful the trees, sky and mountains were as Dad drove over that mountain pass every weekend.

Not until we were grown did Mom confess that she was afraid of heights and had taken up skiing to overcome that fear. What a fun way to overcome one’s terrors, and what a great example of trusting God! Mom’s fearlessness taught us to take life head on and not to be frightened of what might happen. More importantly, Mom taught us to trust in the tender care of Jesus. I Peter 5:7 (NIV) says, “Cast all your anxiety on him (God) because he cares for you.”

The two words that cause panic, crush dreams and stop us in our tracks are ”What if…?” What if I fail? What if it does not work out? What if something bad happens? These are the kinds of nervous questions that God wants us to humbly drop at His feet. He knows exactly what will happen and He is in control, so we do not ever need to ask that silly “What If” question again. What God wants us to do besides leaving our anxieties with Him is to seek His guidance and wisdom for every decision we make and then let Him handle the outcome. Trusting in God’s care will help us to lead the confident, abundant life that He created us to live.

God Fights Our Battles

Commander of Gods Army

By Lisa Nordell-Detres

I am reading through the Bible in chronological order this year and today, the Children of Israel had finally crossed over into Canaan, the Promised Land after wandering in the desert for 40 years. The older generation who had come out of slavery from Egypt just couldn’t get the concept of following God without complaining and were not allowed into what would become Israel, not even Moses. Joshua, Caleb and the younger generation were preparing to take over Jericho, the first fortified city in the path of the millions of God’s people.

God had promised His people that if they trusted Him and obeyed His commandments, He would go before them and drive out the people who lived in the land of Canaan. In Joshua 5:13-15, Moses successor, Joshua, was preparing his army to attack Jericho the next day and was out surveying the city. He looked up and saw a Man with sword drawn. Joshua asked Him whose side He was on and He said that He was the Commander of God’s army. Joshua fell on his face and worshiped the pre-incarnate Christ. During the following week, Joshua led his army in obedience to God’s instruction to the first of many miraculous victories in favor of Israel.

I get chills thinking about how the forces of God’s army, led by our Savior, Jesus Christ, are  fighting our battles every day. All we need to do is to trust God to take care of us and to follow His instructions in the Bible. We are reminded of God’s power in our lives in Romans 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This is a mantra that we can carry with us every single day. There is no need to live in fear, to be in fight mode, or to worry about the future when we belong to the Commander of God’s army!

What are you waiting for? Go claim your victory over your battles in God’s name!
